Bold Bathroom Makeover
Meet Ani, my talented 8 yo sidekick who also happens to be my youngest daughter. I often consult her on design decisions and for this space she asked to take the lead on the entire project. Here’s how it went.
This is where we started. Dreary and sad beige walls and trim. Not the worst room ever, but it needed some love. Ani had been begging to have full control over the design of a room other than her bedroom and I saw this as the perfect opportunity.
Ani first selected the wallpaper knowing that was the focal point she wanted for the space. She then selected the colors and rest of the materials and look from there. This peel and stick wallpaper is from Walls Need Love. I installed this paper on my own, but I highly recommend having a helper and preferably someone who will be patient with you when you get pissed off at it! HAHA! Really, though, with wallpaper, I recommend letting go of perfection and just aiming for good enough.
Now we needed some trim to go over the wallpaper. We were first going to just do a painted mdf trim, but I didn’t have enough kicking around. Ani is into sustainability and wanted to see what we had kicking around before I went out to buy something.
The first time I showed her the half round as an option for trim, she didn’t love it and then we doubled it up and it was a no brainer. We both love how it resembles bamboo adding to the jungle vibe. And it’s different than anything we had seen. This trim was leftover from my nightstand project and it was the perfect amount. Knowing we are likely moving walls around in the future for a bigger remodel, I opted to simply glue the trim on. See my creative approach to hold it tight as the glue set up!
My favorite surprise project was this bathtub skirt. I had seen another blogger/designer, Christin with Terra + Tint, add a skirt to her tub quite a while back and when I saw that wood trim, I knew we needed wood elsewhere to bring it all together. I ran to Lowe's and grabbed some inexpensive hemlock boards and went to work. This was an easy project and adds a lot of dimension to the space. Maybe someone will actually use the tub now.
This once drab bathroom is full of life now thanks to this little cat lover. Ani took this bathroom in a direction I never would have gone. I know I will be consulting her on future projects.
