One Room Challenge Spring 2021 Week 2 - Layout and List

Well…I’m still in it! After almost throwing in the towel on this project, I’m back at the bathroom for the One Room Challenge . Here’s why I freaked out a little. I was looking at the huge picture of renovating the entire structure/tiny home rather than breaking down what absolutely needs to be done in order to complete the bathroom. Once I took some deep breaths and made some lists, it started to all feel possible. Want to see the plans we landed on? First, we had to remove all of the messy flooring so we could really see what we were working with. I started off trying to pry off the vinyl flooring with a pryer, and then Cookie remembered we had a handy jackhammer type tool. What was going to take 3 days to complete took an hour! Woohoo!

At this point I was actually feeling pretty good about the task at hand, but then about 20 min later, my hand was already cramping and I had only made it through 9 tiles. This is when it pays to have the correct tools for the job!

Thankfully, we had this tool on hand from our basement renovation. It felt like a miracle. Bye bye flooring….hello clean slate!

Next step was to dial in the layout so we can get this thing framed in. You can see where we outlined a couple of ideas. The original plan was in blue, but we felt like the hallway to the bedroom was too narrow. After a few rotations, we found a way to get everything we wanted without compromise. It was just like playing a game of Tetris. One of my favorite games to play on my Nintendo Gameboy back in the day.

Here’s what the first draft looked like. I just saw a lot of wasted space and a few problem spots with this plan. Being in the space and taping it out really helped us visualize the flow. I’m so glad we took that extra time to make some crucial changes.

By turning the 36x48” shower, we were able to widen the hall by a foot. It’s amazing how different the whole space seems with that hall opened up. And now I think I’m going to be able to work an arch into my design. YAY! Ok…don’t get ahead of yourse…

My focus needs to remain on the bathroom until I complete the One Room Challenge and then it’s go time on the rest of the space. Be sure to tune into my Instagram stories this week as we start framing and prepping for tile!
